Violet Margaret Livingstone Ballinger was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1894, and moved to South Africa in 1904. Following an academic career, she concentrated her energy on politics and in 1937 was elected native representative for the Cape Eastern Circle, a seat she held until 1960.
